Inset Electric Fires - Frequently Asked Questions

What are inset electric fires and how do they differ from wall-mounted electric fires?

Inset electric fires sit flush within an existing fireplace opening, giving the look of a traditional built-in fire without any need for a flue or gas connection. Because they slot into the recess of a standard surround, they preserve the classic focal-point feel of a hearth - something a surface-fixed unit cannot replicate. The flame effect and heat output can be used independently, so you get ambience year-round regardless of the season. If your room has no suitable fireplace opening, our wall-mounted electric fires are a straightforward alternative worth considering.

Do inset electric fires need a chimney or any special venting?

No - inset electric fires require no chimney, flue, or gas supply at all. They run from a standard 230V socket, so the only real installation requirement is a nearby power outlet and a fireplace opening of the right dimensions. This makes them one of the simplest heating options to retrofit into an older Irish home that already has a traditional surround. Most models are designed to fit 16″ or 18″ standard openings, and the flame effect can be enjoyed completely independently of the heater, giving you a cosy atmosphere without running up electricity costs.

How much heat output do inset electric fires typically produce, and are they enough to heat a room?

Most inset electric fires deliver up to 2kW of heat output, which is sufficient to take the chill off a small to medium-sized living room of around 20-25 sq m. Because electric heat converts at close to 100% efficiency at the point of use, the output you see on the spec is the output you get into the room. For larger or draughtier spaces you may want to consider supplementing with a solid-fuel or pellet stove for primary heating. The team at our Drogheda showroom are happy to help you work out the right solution for your room size and insulation level.
