It may seem straightforward, but first, what is a wood burning stove? It is a closed metal heating appliance that burns logs to warm a room. So, are wood burning stoves efficient? The direct answer is yes, and a stove’s efficiency rating is how you can tell.

Efficiency is measured as a percentage. It tells you how much of the energy created by burning your logs is turned into useful heat for your room, rather than going straight up the chimney and out of your home. A modern stove converts around 70 to 80% of that energy into heat, compared with roughly 30% for an open fire.

So, efficiency ratings are an essential part of choosing the right stove, not just for your comfort but for your wallet, as you burn less logs for the same heat. They matter for the environment too, as Irish regulations on solid fuel continue to tighten.

How efficient really is a wood burning stove?

Unlike an open fire, a wood burning stove has airtight doors and connects to a sealed flue pipe, so it won’t pull warm air from your radiators or storage heaters up the chimney. That means a stove keeps saving energy even when it is not lit.

So what drives efficiency?

Dry wood: logs under 20% moisture burn hotter and cleaner.

The right size: an oversized stove gets turned down and burns poorly.

ECO Design: new stoves have met stricter efficiency rules since 2022.

Browse our wood burning stoves and solid fuel stoves. So it’s safe to say a wood burning stove is extremely efficient, and that’s backed by proof.

Are wood burning stoves bad for the environment?

The short answer is yes, but not as bad as they used to be. They are not emission free, but a wood burning stove can be environmentally friendly if you use it responsibly. There are a few important points to consider when heating your home with one.

Using the correct fuel

Unlike fossil fuels such as gas, coal or oil, wood is a renewable fuel. It is often called carbon neutral because the tree absorbed that carbon while it grew. That only holds if the wood comes from sustainably managed forests that are replanted, so by burning wood from responsible sources, you are heating your home with the environment in mind.

Cutting down smoke

The bigger issue is smoke. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) reports that burning solid fuel in our homes is the main source of fine particulate matter in Irish air. A modern ECO Design stove produces far less of it than an older stove or open fire, and dry wood cuts it further.

Following Irish rules

Irish rules now back this up. Since September 2026, wood sold in units of 2 cubic metres or less must have a moisture content under 20%, so logs bought in bags should already be ready to burn.

Are wood burning stoves bad for your health?

Again, the short answer is that they can be. Smoke from solid fuel is linked to poor air quality and breathing problems in Ireland, though coal and peat are bigger culprits than wood. Recent UK research has also linked indoor solid fuel use to a faster decline in lung function.

But much of this risk comes down to how you actually use your stove. Get these right and you cut it significantly:

Burn only dry wood, never rubbish or treated timber.

When refuelling, open the door slowly and only briefly.

Let the fire burn out at night rather than smouldering until morning.

Most importantly, fit a carbon monoxide alarm and have your chimney swept every year.

Are wood burning stoves eco friendly?

Yes, wood burning stoves can be eco friendly as long as you choose one correctly and use it efficiently as instructed above. Remember that a wood burning stove can be eco friendly when you:

Choose an ECO Design stove, sized correctly for your specific room.

Buy locally grown, kiln-dried wood, ideally from a WFQA certified supplier.

Use it to heat the room you spend most of your time in, rather than having your central heating running.

If you want an even lower emission option, pellet stoves burn cleaner still, and electric fires produce no smoke in your home at all.

So, in short yes, a modern wood burning stove is far more efficient than an open fire. An ECO Design model, dry wood and good habits keep it clean too.
