Solid Fuel Stoves FAQs

Is a solid fuel stove the same as a multi fuel stove?

Yes, the two terms describe the same thing and you will see both used on this page. A solid fuel stove has a raised grate and a removable ashpan, so air can be drawn up from underneath the fire. That is what lets it burn smokeless fuel and briquettes as well as logs, because those fuels need air from below to stay lit. A dedicated wood burner has a flat floor and no grate. If you only ever intend to burn logs, see our wood burning stoves.

What fuel can I burn in a solid fuel stove in Ireland?

Approved smokeless fuels, wood briquettes, peat briquettes and dry seasoned logs. Since Ireland's solid fuel regulations came into force, smoky bituminous coal can no longer be sold anywhere in the State, so any coal you buy should be a low smoke, approved product. Wood sold in small quantities must be at or below 25 per cent moisture. Burning wet timber or unapproved fuel blackens the glass, cuts your heat output and builds tar inside the chimney flue, which is a fire risk as well as a cleaning job.

Can a solid fuel stove heat my radiators and hot water?

Yes, if you pick a boiler model. Alongside the room heaters on this page we stock boiler versions of the Henley Sherwood and Druid at 12kW and 21kW, and the Stanley Erin, Fern and Reginald between 14.2kW and 15.5kW. A boiler stove splits its output between the room it stands in and your cylinder and radiators, and that split varies by model. The plumbing is work for a qualified installer. Browse the full boiler stoves range, or talk to us in Drogheda about matching one to your system.

Should I choose a freestanding, insert or cassette solid fuel stove?

It depends on your fireplace. A freestanding stove such as the Henley Aran or Stanley Corrib sits out on the hearth and radiates heat from every side, which usually puts more warmth into the room. An insert like the Muckross, Arklow or Phoenix Ruby beds back into the chimney breast for a tidier finish. A cassette such as the Solis I5 or Henley C400 sits fully inside the opening behind a slim frame. Compare our insert stoves and cassette stoves.
