Do electric stoves need a flue or chimney?
No. Electric stoves burn no fuel, so there are no fumes to vent and no flue, chimney or installer needed. Most simply plug into a standard socket, which makes them ideal for apartments, new builds and rooms where a flue is not practical. Freestanding models can stand almost anywhere, or sit in an existing fireplace for a traditional look. You do not need a non-combustible hearth as you would with a solid fuel stove, but many customers add one of our hearths to finish the setting. How much heat does an electric stove give out?
Most electric stoves in our range have a 2kW fan heater, usually with two heat settings and a thermostat to hold the room at the temperature you set. That makes them a good source of top-up heat for a living room, bedroom or home office rather than a way to heat the whole house. At full power, a 2kW heater uses 2kWh of electricity an hour, so the hourly cost is double your unit rate. If you need more heat than that, look at our room heater stoves or pellet stoves.
Can you use an electric stove without the heat on?
Yes. On most electric stoves, the flame effect runs independently of the heater, so you can enjoy the look of a real fire all year round, even on summer evenings. The flame effect on its own uses far less electricity than the heater, as it is mostly LED lighting. Many models come with a remote control, letting you switch the flames and heat on and off from your seat. If you would rather mount your fire on the wall, our wall mounted electric fires offer the same flame-only option in a slimmer design.
What is the difference between Optiflame, Opti-myst and Opti-V electric stoves?
These are Dimplex's flame effects, and they are the main thing that sets one electric stove apart from another. Optiflame uses LED light and moving reflections to create a flickering flame, with Optiflame 3D adding extra depth. Opti-myst uses a fine water mist lit from below to create flames and rising smoke, so its water tank needs topping up now and then. Opti-V is Dimplex's virtual flame technology, with a layered flame picture that is hard to tell from the real thing. The best way to compare them is side by side in our Drogheda showroom.
