MiFire Stoves FAQs
What are MiFire stoves, and why are they popular in Ireland?
MiFire stoves are a range of EcoDesign-compliant wood burning and multifuel stoves built to meet current efficiency and emissions standards. Most models in the range output 5 kW, which suits the majority of Irish living rooms, and their compact size makes them a practical fit for both existing fireplaces and new installations. The multifuel models come with a dedicated grate and ash pan, letting you burn wood logs or approved smokeless solid fuel depending on what suits you. If you need a flue to go with your stove, see our chimney flue range.
What size room will a MiFire stove heat?
A rough guide for a well-insulated Irish home is to allow around 1 kW of output per 14 m³ of room volume. A sitting room of around 25-30 m² - roughly 5 m × 5.5 m - with a standard 2.4 m ceiling will typically suit a stove in the 4-6 kW range, which covers most of the MiFire range at 5 kW. Older or poorly insulated rooms will need more output for the same floor area, so it is worth factoring in draughts, window area and ceiling height before you settle on a model. If you are unsure, contact us and the team can help you work it out properly before you buy.
What does a MiFire stove installation require?
Every MiFire stove installation needs a flue and a suitable hearth. If you have an existing masonry chimney in good condition, it can usually be lined with a flexible flue liner; if there is no chimney, a twin wall flue running up an external wall is the standard alternative. Either way, the flue must be no smaller than the stove's outlet and must meet the minimum size set by Part J for the fuel you plan to burn, so confirm the size with your installer before ordering. Building Regulations (Part J in Ireland) also require a carbon monoxide alarm in the room where the stove sits, and in any habitable room a flue passes through or over. The team in our Drogheda showroom can walk you through the flue route and hearth options before you commit.
