Cassette Stoves FAQs
What is a cassette stove?
A cassette stove is built into the wall rather than standing out on the hearth. The firebox sits recessed inside a fireplace opening or chimney breast, so all you see is the glass door and a slim frame, which gives a cleaner, more modern look than a freestanding model. It also heats the room far more efficiently than an open fire, with the Stanley Solis I5 rated at up to 83.7%. If you would rather a freestanding stove, see our room heater stoves, or for a traditional cast iron look, our insert stoves.
Can I fit a cassette stove into my existing fireplace?
Often, yes. Compact models such as the Stanley Solis I5 are made to fit a standard fireplace opening, while larger 8kW and 9kW cassette stoves may need the opening widened. Check the dimensions on each product page against your opening before you buy. The chimney will usually need a flexible liner that matches the stove's flue outlet, which is 125mm on the Solis I5. We stock two-ply flexi flues for exactly this job, and our recommended fitters can survey your chimney first.
Can I have a cassette stove without a chimney?
Yes. Where there is no chimney, a false chimney breast is built from non-combustible board to house the cassette stove, with a twin wall insulated flue running up through the ceiling and roof, or out through the wall and up the outside of the house. This is how most media wall and hole-in-the-wall designs are done. It adds building work and flue costs, so budget for it from the start. We stock twin wall flues in black and silver. If a flue is not practical, our electric cassette fires give the same built-in look with no flue at all.
Should I choose a 3-sided or 4-sided frame for my cassette stove?
It depends on where the stove sits. A 3-sided frame covers the top and sides, and suits a cassette stove installed at hearth level with its base resting on the hearth. A 4-sided frame borders the whole stove, giving a framed picture effect when the cassette is raised up the wall. The Stanley Solis range is available with both. Many customers finish the chimney breast in stone cladding with a timber beam above from our mantles and beams range, but keep any timber at the clearance distance set out in the stove manual.
