What size fireplace hearth do I need for a stove or insert?
The size you need depends on the type of appliance and how it sits in the opening. As a general rule under Irish building regulations, a constructional hearth must extend at least 300mm in front of the appliance and at least 150mm to each side, with a minimum thickness of 125mm. A decorative granite hearth sits on top of this and is sized to suit the fireplace opening - straight, splayed, and curved options all follow the same principle. If you are fitting a stove, the front edge of the decorative hearth must still clear the stove door by the required distance. How deep should my fireplace hearth be?
For a solid-fuel stove or insert, Irish building regulations require the constructional hearth to extend at least 500mm in front of the appliance and at least 150mm to each side - so the finished granite slab you lay on top needs to meet or exceed those projections. Most of the granite hearths we carry are 36″ (roughly 915mm) wide and 30″ (roughly 760mm) deep, which comfortably satisfies the front projection for the majority of stoves.
