Frequently Asked Questions About Sauna Stoves

What size sauna stove do I need for my sauna room?

Sizing a sauna stove comes down to the cubic volume of your sauna room. As a general rule of thumb, you match the stove's rated output to at least the full volume of the space - a poorly matched stove will either struggle to reach temperature or overheat a small cabin. The insulation quality of the walls and ceiling also plays a role, as does whether the room is indoors or in an exposed outdoor structure. If you're unsure, our team in the Drogheda showroom can help you work out the right output for your setup before you buy.

Do sauna stoves need a flue or chimney?

Yes - all wood-burning sauna stoves require a flue to safely exhaust combustion gases. Because sauna stoves run at high temperatures, the flue must be rated for solid fuel use and sized correctly for the stove's output; undersized or poorly routed flue runs reduce draw and can cause smoke to back up into the room. A twin wall insulated flue is the standard solution for both indoor and outdoor installations, keeping the outer surface safe to touch and maintaining the draught. We stock a full range of flue components to suit.

What wood should I burn in a wood-burning sauna stove?

Kiln-dried or well-seasoned hardwood is the right fuel for sauna stoves. Hardwoods such as oak, ash, and birch burn hotter, hold a longer coal bed, and produce far less creosote than softwoods or wet timber - creosote build-up inside the flue is both a fire risk and a maintenance headache. Softwoods with a high resin content are best avoided entirely. Aim for logs with a moisture content at or below 20% for a clean, efficient burn, and remove ash from the firebox every few sessions to keep airflow consistent.
