Back Boiler Stoves FAQs
What is a back boiler stove?
A back boiler stove heats the room it stands in and your central heating at the same time. A water jacket around the firebox picks up heat from the fire and sends it to your radiators and hot water cylinder, so the stove's output is split between the two. The Stanley Erin, for example, delivers up to 4.5kW to the room and up to 9.7kW to the boiler. If you only want to heat one room, a room heater stove is simpler and cheaper to install. All of our back boiler stoves are solid fuel models.
What size back boiler stove do I need?
Size it on the boiler output, not the total kW figure in the product name, because only the boiler output reaches your radiators. As a rough guide, allow around 1kW to 1.5kW for each radiator, plus extra for the hot water cylinder, then compare that total with the boiler output listed on each product page. Our back boiler stoves range from 12kW to 21kW in total output. Going too big causes problems too, as an oversized stove spends its time damped down, which tars the flue. Send us your radiator count and a heating engineer should confirm the final spec.
Can a back boiler stove work with my oil or gas boiler?
Yes, and in Irish homes that is the most common setup. A link-up, usually through a thermal store or heat exchanger, lets the back boiler stove and your existing boiler feed the same radiators, so the oil or gas boiler does far less work on the days the fire is lit. The system must also have a heat leak radiator or gravity circuit, so the stove always has somewhere to send heat if the pump stops during a power cut. This is a job for a qualified heating engineer, not a DIY install. Our recommended fitters can advise on the right link-up.
Can I fit a back boiler stove into my existing fireplace?
Yes, if you choose the right model. Most back boiler stoves in our range are freestanding and sit out on the hearth in front of the fireplace, while the Henley Achill boiler insert is designed to sit within the fireplace opening itself. Either way, the chimney will usually need lining with a flexible liner matched to the stove's flue outlet, which is 150mm on the Stanley Erin. We stock two-ply flexi flues for relining, and a non-combustible hearth in front of the stove completes a safe installation.
