Frequently Asked Questions About Fireplace Surrounds
What are fireplace surrounds and what types of fire can they be used with?
Fireplace surrounds are the decorative frames that dress the opening of a fireplace - typically made up of a mantel shelf, two pilasters, and a frieze - and they form the focal point of a room. The surround frames the fire opening itself; a hearth and insert panel are fitted separately to complete the installation. The surrounds we stock come from Bertoneri, HOTA, and Emporio Marco, and each range is available in a choice of finishes and sizes. They work equally well with a traditional open fire, a stove, or an electric fire - so they suit a wide range of setups. Pop into the Drogheda showroom and our team will help you put the right combination together.
Can I fit a fireplace surround around a stove instead of an open fire?
Yes - a fireplace surround can absolutely be built around a wood-burning or multifuel stove, provided the surround material is non-combustible and the correct clearance distances to combustible materials are maintained in line with Irish building regulations. The surround itself is purely decorative, so the key requirements are met by the hearth beneath and the register plate or closure plate above the stove. If you are working from an existing opening, our team in the Drogheda showroom can help you match a surround to your stove dimensions and discuss the right hearth to go underneath it.
Do fireplace surrounds come with a hearth included, or are they sold separately?
Fireplace surrounds are generally sold as the surround frame only, with the hearth purchased separately to allow you to choose the material, colour, and profile that best suits your room. This is standard practice in the industry, as hearth dimensions depend on the type of fire or stove being installed - a solid-fuel appliance requires a larger constructional hearth than an electric fire, for example. Stone & Stoves stocks hearths and insert panels that are designed to complement the fireplace surround ranges carried in the shop, making it straightforward to put together a matched set.
